Your Hero is Not Who You Think
Forever a passionate freelance writer, I’ve spent a significant amount of time publishing content and interacting with other writers on the InfoBarrel.com forums. New to InfoBarrel, emerging blogger and entrepreneur, Mike Moyer, quickly caught my attention with his detailed schematic of his plans (Scroll Down to See!) to realize online success. While the words of those who have already “made it” may become dry and rehashed, I admit, there is nothing more refreshing than seeing a passionate individual lay out a step-by-step game plan of exactly how he hopes to build his own online empire. Can he do it? We are rooting for you, Mike!
Without further adieu….

5) Why: Because too many people think success is gift wrapped with a nice bow.
Unqualified and Over Magnified
There is one lesson that I seem to learn over and over again as I slowly conquer the world: Nobody deserves the pedestal they are put on. I’m not saying modeling yourself after a successful person is a bad thing, or that people don’t deserve the fame they’ve achieved. Looking up to someone for advice, inspiration or motivation can certainly give you the boost you need to actually accomplish your goals.
However, there is a fine line between looking to others for inspiration and looking at others as a reflection of your own weakness. Too often we assume that success is a gift, something given only to the smartest or most attractive. But when you actually get to know people, you find out they just happen to have worked really hard and been in the right place at the right time.
I am a huge proponent of positive thinking. But, I don’t believe thinking positively is enough to “manifest” your dreams. The only way to manifest your dreams is to become a do-er. The difference between you and your hero, is that your hero is out “doing” and you are at home “watching.”
5 Tips To Start Something Right Now
Focus On Today – This is something I am working on myself. The task of creating a full time income online while watching my savings dwindle is terrifying. I just have to keep reminding myself, that this is what I’ve prepared for. If I focus exclusively on today’s tasks, the prospect of writing the hundreds of thousands of words in the long run is less daunting.
Do something every day that helps you achieve your goal, starting with today. The rule is it must be something that actually propels you forward, no matter how insignificant. Something that will eventually propel you forward, like more research, doesn’t count. (i.e. stop reading and start writing, stop listening and start playing, stop watching and start practicing)
Be Your Own Hero – Studying the path of someone else is only advantageous to the point that it points you in the right direction. Every-one’s path is full of different opportunities, and experiences. Someone else’s “right place,” is probably no longer the right time. Instead be your own hero, and stick to the plan you’ve created. At the very least give yourself a shot at failing- most people live their lives without ever having the opportunity to say they’ve failed at something.
Focus On What You Can Do – Recognizing that you are not the best at something really takes the pressure off starting something new. You are guaranteed not to be the best at what you do right off the bat. Talent is earned and compounded over time. Start right now building the skills you’ll eventually need to be an expert.
Kick Over The Pedestal – Being in the live event industry, you would not believe the things I’ve seen that go unnoticed by tens of thousands of people. The fact is, unless you’ve opened your mind to the idea that everyone is of equal potential, you will never ascend to level of your heroes.
Imitate You Competition –One of my favorite excuses I hear from potential successful entrepreneurs is that there is no point in putting in the work because someone has already done it before. You can tell me you don’t have the time or that you don’t have an idea yet, but don’t tell me its already been done.
If you need convincing that competition is not an issue, look up how many Chinese take-outs there are in your area. The fact is, competition means there is a demand for your idea or services. Every single one of my businesses that I’ve started, people have told me it’s already being done by blank. So what?
As a relatively young person, I have been able to accomplish a few things some people might consider impressive. I have started and sold successful companies, converted an old school bus into an RV, spent 5 weeks living on a tour bus with a popular band, and most recently dropped every one of my obligations to create a living online.
What I have learned from all of these experiences is that people should be looked up to because they did something, not because they did something great. In the words of Seneca “Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.”

This was a great post. The “Be Your Own Hero” is the best advice I have heard in a long time.
